Last week, we reported that Maltacom was about to announce new tariffs that should offer more value to the customers. Today, the new tariffs, or to be more accurate, 'tariff plans', were announced. To start with, the current tariffs will remain unchanged unless you opt-in to one of the three new packages. The new packages are named 'Talk 200' (reminds us of 'Hello 100'), 'Free Nights & Weekends', and 'Business Talk 500'. The first two are being offered for residential customers, with the latter being offered only for business users. Those who opt-in to the 'Talk 200' package will start paying a rent of Lm3.95 monthly instead of the current Lm2.57. However, with this package, one gets 200 minutes to other Maltacom numbers for free each month instead of the current 20 free pulses that can only be used during nights and weekends. Also, calls to other fixed line networks are charged at 1c5 per minute. We tried to contact Maltacom to clarify whether these are charged on a per-second basis, but were asked to phone back tomorrow as they don't have any information yet. Calls to mobile phones are charged at 2c5 every 15 seconds. No mention yet of what happens when those 200 free minutes are exceeded... Will check tomorrow. The 'Free Nights & Weekends' package costs Lm5.50 monthly, and as the name implies, gives you free calls to other Maltacom numbers betweek 6pm and 6am and during weekends. It also includes 200 free minutes to be used for Maltacom numbers during the rest of the day. Calls to mobile phones are charged at 2c5 every 15 seconds just like in the 'Talk 200' plan, however, calls to other local fixed line networks are charged at 1c7 per minute ""during peak hours" instead of 1c5. That's basically it. Sorry if we tore your high expectations apart. More details about the new tariff plans will be released tomorrow.
17 May Update: Local calls are charged on a per-minute basis. If the 200 minutes are exceeded, calls to Maltacom numbers are charged at 1c5 per minute. Verdict: VoIP offerings (Melita's Hello and Maltacom's IPhone) will still have the best value on the market for the time being. Links: Maltacom Press release
